Youth Day + Youth to Washington Tour2008 Illinois Electric and Telephone Cooperative Youth DayIllinois Electric and Telephone Cooperative Youth Day activities
are scheduled for April 9, 2008. Spoon River
Electric will be participating with Mid-Century Telephone Cooperative
again this year. This program continues to be well attended by
state officials and legislators, as well as student-participants. Last
year, close to 300 students and adult leaders from AIEC member-cooperatives
gathered to tour Springfield and see "state government in
action." They met with some 28 state legislators and
other leaders. The day will conclude after the museum, at which time we will return to the Convention Center for Pizza before heading home. Students interested in the Washington, DC trip will be interviewed by AIEC judges at this time. Two students will be selected to represent SREC in Washington, DC June 13-20 for the annual Youth to Washington Tour.
Senators David Koehler, Dale Risinger and John Sullivan and Representative Rich Myers met with 12 students representing Spoon River Electric Cooperative and 11 students from Mid Century Telephone Cooperative during the Illinois Electric and Telephone Cooperatives Youth Day on Wednesday, April 9, in Springfield. Working together the Illinois cooperatives have developed strong, successful programs that have continued for nearly 50 years. Youth to Washington Tour is scheduled for Friday, June 13 to Friday, June 20. Those students chosen by the AIEC and Co-op will have all of their expenses paid by SREC. Also, "Willie Wiredhand" students are welcome to participate in the tour. "Willie Wiredhand" students are those relatives or friends associated with an AIEC member-cooperative who are "sponsored" by a member-cooperative and participate at their own expense. The cost for a "Willie" student is also $1,100. We recommend that "Willie Wiredhand" students be high school sophomores, juniors or seniors in order for them to obtain maximum benefit from the tour. These "Willie" reservations are taken on a "first-reserved, first-confirmed" basis. Even though we anticipate having plenty of spaces available this year, make certain your employees and directors reserve space early for any sons, daughters or other family members who intend to participate as "Willies" in 2008. Also, please note that we require a deposit of $550 for all "Willie" students by May 1. National Youth Tour Website:
